Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterso

(1864–1941)
Banjo Paterson was born in Narambla in New South Wales. He was a farmer and a lawyer who became famous for his poetry. He later worked in the city as a newspaper and magazine editor, but disliked city life. In the First World War he joined up as a soldier and became an ambulance driver.

Paterson wrote many well-known Australian poems, including 'The Man from Snowy River', 'Clancy of the Overflow' and 'The Man from Ironbark'. Many people also believe that he wrote the words to 'Waltzing Matilda'. His poems and stories have been published many times. His work has also been recorded, broadcast on the radio and made into films and a television series.

His picture is on the $10 note and on stamps.
