Celebrating Democracy Week 2005
Civics and citizenship education: local, regional and global ...
School events
During 12–19 October 2005, hundreds of schools celebrated our democracy with a wide range of activities supported by funding from the then Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training. Grants were awarded to more than 200 schools in all education sectors around Australia. Large events organised by the Education Departments in Victoria, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory and Queensland also received assistance. For details on how schools celebrated during Celebrating Democracy Week see the Celebrating Democracy Week 2005 Case Studies.
Every Voice Counts! Student Forum
In another feature event for Celebrating Democracy Week 2005, 30 students from each State and Territory took part in Every Voice Counts!, a three-day student forum which was held in Canberra. The forum considered the issue of 'access to clean water as a fundamental human right'. Student participants received a framed certificate from the then Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Dr Brendan Nelson, MP, during the launch of Celebrating Democracy Week at Parliament House. Read the reports of their experiences at Every Voice Counts! 2005.
